Design Technology for Infants
At Devonshire Infant Academy we try to ensure that Design Technology (DT) is an “inspiring, rigorous and practical subject”. We aim to equip children with the skills to design, create and evaluate a range of products and projects for different audiences through our creative curriculum. From designing and making museum artefacts to preparing and cooking food, children learn to apply many skills across maths, art, computing and science in contexts which lead to outcomes which are shared both within school and the local community. D+T at Devonshire teaches our children a wide range of life skills, alongside the practical and evaluative skills, including collaborative working, problem solving, innovation, empathy and pride. By learning to design and create the children become capable citizens who are able to apply their skills in the real world and as the designers and creators of the future.
Aims
- To develop the practical skills needed to make a range of products for a range of audiences.
- To be able to follow the design process of plan, create and evaluate and to be able to critically critique and review what they have made.
- To develop the vocabulary of practical skills and also the language of evaluation and improvement.
- To begin to understand the principles of nutrition and begin to learn to cook.
- To develop life-long skills and attributes, such as collaborative working, empathy, problem solving and pride through creativity and creation.
Design & Technology for Juniors
The Intent for Design and Technology:
At Devonshire Junior Academy, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to raise the aspirations of our children and realise that they are from a variety of backgrounds, but we believe that this should not hinder our children, but enhance their experiences. As a school, we aim to, wherever possible, link D&T closely with other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing, engineering and art. This will take place through challenge packs that mainly take place during our creative curriculum learning. In addition, our children are given the opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology (locally and globally), its uses and its effectiveness and they (our pupils) are encouraged to become innovators and risk takers.
