Art for Infants
At Devonshire Infants we are passionate about exploring the world around us and expressing our ideas creatively. This starts in Nursery, for example in exploring mark making, paints and putting found objects together, and progresses into gaining knowledge about a diverse range of artists and art works that then inspire the children to try new techniques and media.
Throughout their time with us, children will be provided with opportunities to learn about artists, crafts people and designers both past and present and those from different cultures. In doing this, children will gain an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the diversity, culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Through producing creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences, children will be able to think critically, develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and learn to appreciate their own work and the work of others.
Art for Juniors
The intent for Art at Devonshire Junior Academy is to inspire, engage and challenge pupils by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to explore their own ideas, produce creative work, and record their experiences in sketchbooks to critically evaluate using artistic language.
Implementation
At Devonshire Junior Academy, Art & Design is taught as part of the school’s overall creative curriculum and the skills, techniques and experiences embody the Art and Design objectives from the national curriculum. Learning is progressive throughout our curriculum and is incorporated into our termly challenge packs so prior knowledge and skills will be revisited and developed further so that they have a secure grasp and develop mastery within drawing, painting, sculpting, craft and design techniques. As they progress through our school, our curriculum exposes every member of our school community to a wide range of great diverse artists and art forms, including those from different periods in time and cultures. Furthermore, there are many cross-curricular links with other subjects as part of our challenge-based learning. This, in turn, develops global citizens with an understanding of how art impacts and enhances societies and our surroundings. High priority is given to the understanding of subject terminology, there are opportunities for discussion, commenting on what we have seen, and talking through ideas and plans for our own work. We encourage all children to participate in a variety of creative experiences for example through learning challenge journeys and outcomes, religious and cultural celebrations as well as art competitions, outdoor art and clubs, through which we aim to build the confidence of all children and instil resilience and develop an appreciation and enjoyment of art and design.
